Flowering plants have an entirely different genetic make-up than all other plant species. Flowering plants contain mitochondrial DNA, which is something we each receive only from our mothers. Under normal circumstances mitochondrial DNA has little purpose in the flowering plant, however when the plant becomes injured or is sick, the mitochondrial DNA goes to work and the plant can even take on mitochondrial DNA from its surrounding environment to aid in healing. There is a very wise process going on in the flowering plant that simply cannot be duplicated in a laboratory setting. This is why I choose herbal preparations for much of my health and wellness routine. Although much of my nursing training criticized the use of herbs, I cannot say enough about how they have changed my life for the better. I cook with more spices that I ever imagined. Each day I enjoy herbal tea preparations depending on how I am feeling or what I think my body needs. And when it comes to herbs, I spend equal amounts of time in nature looking for ‘medicine’s or playing in my garden as I do using them in my kitchen to prepare healthy and wholesome meals. Health is found in the kitchen and wellness is found when we get back to nature and using God’s medicines. The use of herbs for wellness can be overwhelming and you have to be careful that the herbs you enjoy do not interact with any medications you may be taking. Thus, it is recommended to work with a professional. I grow most of my herbs myself or forage for them in nature.
