What brought me back to nature care and herbal medicine…..
February 2013 my life completely changed. In fact, I almost died and I haven’t been the same since. Prior to my illness I was full of energy, highly motivated and determined to make my mark in academia as a nurse scientist. My Illness hit me hard. And for a period of time I wasn’t even sure I was going to survive, let alone continue to do the work I’ve spent most of my life doing. When I was 12 weeks pregnant with my fourth baby, I had a blood clot that lodged in my lung which resulted in a part of my lung dying and bleeding significantly for a few weeks. I had a few hospitalizations, and a series of heart problems that led to a heart attack, chronic lung pain and neurocardiogenic syncope. My pregnancy was a continuous onslaught of complications from that time on. But with God’s grace, I was able to survive and was given a beautiful baby boy almost 8 months later.
I am a nurse and to be honest, I had no idea how to take care of myself. And I can also say with a great amount of frustration, that none of my healthcare providers knew how to really help me. Once I delivered my baby, I was “no longer a problem”; but I was on a whole host of medications and the fear, anxiety and pain of now living with a chronic health condition and this traumatic experience was still there. Because I was young and otherwise healthy, I was literally let go from the medical teams that were following me with very little follow up.
Deep Roots Healing is the result of the struggle I had to redesign my physical and emotional self after my illness to get back to working and living the life of my dreams. For a good year after my illness, I was just tried to stay alive. Now, almost 8 years later I’ve created two thriving companies, I’m in the best physical shape of my life and I finally feel like I’m living my full potential. For me, my illness resulted in a completely positive life transformation. But I recognize that if certain things had not happened for me, the result may have turned out very differently.
I am now able to see my illness as a gift. As a nurse, I thought I knew how to talk and listen to patients who were going through health crises, but I now realize I had no idea. I had no real perspective from which to base my assumptions on. I now have that. I know what it is like to think about death and make plans for your children, husband, and family once you’re gone. I know how it feels to be in so much pain and the people around you saying “you will be okay”, “just push through”. I know how it feels to be alone, in a world that is not really listening to you. I know what it feels like to be a survivor.
When I was recovering from my illness, I never imagined I would create my own companies, Valtari Bio and Deep Roots Healing, nor did I imagine I would leave my academic appointment to do it. But I believe I have been given a tremendous gift to be used to help others, and every day I am not using that gift I am wasting the precious time I’ve been given. The details of how we are going to use our gifts aren’t always up for us to decide. To truly thrive in this world, we have to be willing to let go of our preconceived notions of success and follow God’s lead. It is His wisdom that I have allowed to enter my life and it has forever changed me as a person, as a nurse, and as a healer. Healing comes from within and once you recognize how to harness this power you too can begin to walk the path you were meant to walk.
At Deep Roots Healing LLC we provide guidance on holistic integrative health approaches to faith-based health and wellness. My mission is to educate, inspire, empower and coach those who want to adopt sustainable holistic leadership strategies into their daily lives to balance spirit, mind and body enabling them to reach their full potential and become effective leaders in the home, at work and in community. My personal goal continues to be, to go beyond the mantra of being a survivor and actually Thrive in this new life I have created. My illness took something from me, but also gave me a beautiful gift and that is the gift of Life. No one is guaranteed another day. So I’m planning on living in the moment, welcoming more of God’s medicine into my life, intentionally creating a culture of health and wellness in my personal and professional adventures and sharing my experience with others to inspire, empower, and educate along the way.
I sincerely hope you join the Deep Roots Healing family. You should not be alone in your journey. Well Wishes
